Middlebury, Vermont (pop. 8200) is the largest town in Addison County and the administrative headquarters of this west central Vermont county.

The town, chartered in 1761, settled before the American Revolution, was torched during the War, and did not settle permanently until after the War was over. The whole village has a designation in the National Register of Historic Places, with fine old New England churches and public buildings. Walk through Middlebury Vermont and think of it as a museum – living history.

Driving time to Middlebury, VT is 1 hour from Burlington International Airport in South Burlington, 2.5 hours from Montreal and Albany, NY, 4 hours from Boston and from Bradley International Airport (Hartford, CT), 5 hours from New York City, and just up the road from the Middlebury Airport.

Otter Creek runs through the town, with a photogenic waterfall visible from the Battell Bridge. The longest river in Vermont, Otter Cree was central to the economic development of Middlebury. Mills and factories surrounded Otter creek at Middlebury – including sawmills, gristmills, a paper mill, cotton and woolen textile factories, and an iron foundry. A connection to the Rutland & Burlington Railroad, completed in 1849, increased commerce and built a market for Middlebury-made goods.

Today, Middlebury College, with its Museum of Fine Arts, Performing Arts Center, and a sports complex serving NCAA leading men’s and women’s hockey teams, plays a central role in the life of the town.

Since 1920, the Middlebury College Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference has met in August within the quiet seclusion of the Green Mountain National Forest in Ripton, Vermont. Ripton is where Robert Frost made his home, and the school has preserved it. Frost, and other great writers who met there, referred to the school as “The Mountain.”

Middlebury College is also a pioneer in language immersion and its Language Schools have a 90 year history of excellence.

The Henry Sheldon Museum celebrates Vermont History. The town claims John Deere, who apprenticed in a Middlebury blacksmith shop, as a native son, and installed a plaque across from the museum Deere’s invention of the steel plow.

Another distinguished attraction and employer is Otter Creek Brewing of Middlebury, Vermont, a regional craft brewer producing tasty ales in small batches.

You will find many places to stay in Middlebury VT, which offers a range of inns, bed and breakfasts, and motels.
