Burlington (pop. 39,000) is the largest city in Vermont and in Chittenden County. Burlington, set on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain, was incorporated in 1865 following the Civil War. Burlington Vermont is located 2 hours by car from Montreal... 4 hours from Boston ... 3 hours from Albany ... and 6 hours from New York City. With the opening of the Erie Canal and the Champlain Canal, Burlington became a significant port, trade center and bridge city between New England and the west as early as 1830. The port connected to the Rutland & Burlington Railroad and the Vermont Central Railroad. Burlington’s largest nineteenth century industries were forest products and manufacturing. Burlington, VT largest employers – other than municipal government -- include the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care. Lake Champlain Chocolates, Burton Snowboards, also headquarter in Burlington. Things to Do – Burlington VT include a visit to the Champlain Valley Fair VT in nearby Essex Jct. is a major end-of-summer event, and the Exposition Center hosts events year-round. Visit Essex Junction for details. Burlington is not a skiers’ destination. Ski resorts near Burlington VT include Stowe and Sugarbush, and they are both within an hour’s drive of the Burlington Airport.
