Brattleboro, VT in Windham County, Vermont is located in the southeast corner of the state. The nighttime population is approximately 12,000 souls. Brattleboro is situated astride the Connecticut River, at the mouth of the West River. In winter, ice fishing is a major activity where the two rivers meet. Brattleboro offers excellent opportunities for kayaking, biking, canoeing, skiing. The Brattleboro Country Club is an excellent venue for golf and cross country skiing – just not at the same time. Brattleboro is the oldest town in the state. It has a vibrant arts and crafts community and a highly-regarded psychiatric hospital, the Brattleboro Retreat. One adjective that describes Brattleboro is “Crunchy.” The Brattleboro Food-Co-op is practically the spiritual home of NO-GMO, the movement to eliminate the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture and food processing. If you would expect to find amazing food in Brattleboro, you would not be disappointed. In addition to the local farmer’s market (in season), restaurants in Brattleboro VT in the fine dining category are excellent: plan a dinner at Peter Havens and T. J. Buckley’s. For outdoor barbecue, locals are big fans of the Top of the Hill Grill. Amy’s Bakery, with views of the Connecticut River, is a perfect spot for lunch. And bring home a bag of coffee from Mocha Joe’s, Brattleboro VT’s coffee roaster of choice. We’re partial to Mocha Joe’s Peruvian Organic Decaf. Beer-lovers flock to McNeil’s, a little-known but locally famous brewer (ignore the decor, focus on the brew), and, for ambience, the Flat Street Brew Pub. |
In 1892, Rudyard Kipling married Carrie Balestier in London. On a planned honeymoon stop at Carrie’s family estate near Brattleboro, Kipling learned he was nearly broke. The Kiplings rented a cottage near Brattleboro, and outfitted it with used furniture and equipment (part of a long Vermont tradition – check out Brattleboro’s second-hand shops). The Kipling’s first child was born in Brattleboro, where they lived until the summer of 1896. Then, Kipling moved his family back to England, never to return to Brattleboro. Today, a Brattleboro cineplex bears the Kipling name. Brattleboro isn’t anything if not quirky. To prove it, Brattleboro Vermont sponsors a cow parade, “The Strolling of the Heifers” - a parade of ACTUAL cows. It’s a dairy festival in early June, and it’s lots of fun. President’s Day weekend, Brattleboro’s Rotary Club also sponsors a maple sugar festival, and if you love the taste of maple (I do), this is definitely your go-to place to be. The Brattleboro Rotary also sells Christmas trees, and the prices are excellent. After Thanksgiving, just cruise up Route 1, and look for their sign. |
