Bennington, VT is the county seat of Bennington County, Vermont (nighttime population: 15,700). Bennington is located approximately 3 plus hours from greater Boston, 4 hours to New York City and Montreal, 3 plus hours to Boston, and 2 plus hours to Hartford International Airport. You will also find a state airport in Bennington. Bennington is the largest town in southern Vermont, and the third-largest town in Vermont. The town is known primarily for the Battle of Bennington, fought during the Revolutionary War (even though the fight actually took place in New York State). Nevertheless, Bennington VT is home to the Bennington Battle Monument -- the tallest structure in Vermont. Bennington has ready access to natural resources and waterpower, and a long history of manufacture, primarily within wood processing. The town is also recognized nationally for its pottery, iron, and textiles. Bennington is a university town, home to Bennington College, a progressive, highly-ranked four-year New England liberal arts college. Bennington is also home to Southern Vermont College, a private, four-year, liberal arts college offering a career-directed curriculum. Area attractions include the Bennington Museum, which features a gallery of works by Grandma Moses, and the Bennington Pottery, a world-renowned producer of pottery. |
One of the southern Vermont golf courses we love to play is the Mount Anthony golf course (they make a nice lunch, too). When you play Mount Anthony, you get to see Bennington and its surroundings from 18 different points of view. Driving into Bennington, Vermont somehow I am always reminded of the line "One could do worse than be a swinger of birches." Robert Frost is buried here. If you're on the lookout for hand-crafted brew, check out the Madison Brewing Company on Main Street. It's worth a visit. Bennington's annual showcase events include an antique car show, the kinds of covered bridges for which Vermont is famous, lots of historic homes including many listed in the National Register of Historic Places, live theater and summer concerts, fishing, canoeing, skiing and snowshoeing, and excellent hiking opportunities. |
