Driving time from Derby is 45 minutes to Jay Peak, 2 hours to Montreal, 2 hours to Burlington International Airport in South Burlington, 4 hours (including a pit stop) to Boston, and 10 minutes to the Newport, VT airport and the Canadian border at Derby Line.

Stanstead, Quebec, directly across the border, has a population of roughly 3,000 people. It also has three pharmacies. A month supply of Lipitor is $35 (US) in Stanstead.

I like to think the major Derby tourist attractions are the Christmas tree farm and the farm stand in nearby Newport.

I like to think that hiking the amazing woodland landscapes of the Northeast Kingdom are the most important Derby VT attraction.

I would like to say the smooth Vermont syrup at Border Farm brings people flocking to Derby.

I would even like to think that it’s the Stanstead Historical Society, or the Opera House that straddles the international border, or any number of other Canadian things, that draw travelers to Derby and Derby Line. The Historical Society museum, after all, shows fine art, textiles, and furniture that portray the settlement of the border area between Quebec and Vermont.

But in my heart of hearts, I know it is all those pharmacies in Stanstead, Cookshire, East Angus, Sherbrooke and Magog, Quebec, the ones that sell affordable prescription drugs Americans can actually afford to buy, that are the real attraction.

So, in Derby, in any case, I would look for clean, affordable lodging, a place to stay I would go back to if I had to … an innkeeper who cares.
